 Заголовок:  Why do you relate the technology to art?
Hi!

Maybe I don't understand something?

The difference between digital and analog photography is in how you obtain and store images. As long as the digital process is precise enough (see the links from previous message - 2-megapixel Nikon Coolpix 950s makes superb images - HAVE YOU SEEN THEM YET?), a viewer will not be able to discern a digital photography from analog. When it comes about close-ups, digital photography truly brings state-of-the-art technology to the masses. :-))

If you are talking about how to store images, Kodak in the United States is switching their laboratories to more and more of digital stuff. Right now, there exists and widely used Kodak Advantix technology that lets you take pictures on FILM (+ panoramic mode) but have them previewed before you print any frames -- and then print them in any quantity you want and any size you want. (Whereas in Ukraine because of prices/(avg.income) you have to choose which frames you want to print out of the entire film, in the US it is much cheaper to print all frames - multiple copies: x1, x2, x3 - your order is carried out without human involvement (at so-called BULK RATE - $0.08-$0.09 per print), than print selected frames - when a photo lab operator is involved (this costs 3 times more expensive - $0.28 per print(so-called RE-PRINTS) at Wal-mart ). That is why the film is usually first developed and printed automatically, and then re-printed if necessary. This Advantix technology also uses little human involvement, so price per print are cheaper (but cameras and materials are more expensive so far) and re-prints are cheaper as well - the same price.

Many laboratories - in bigger cities are now offering storage in Kodak PhotoCD format. Gradually Kodak makes this technology available everywhere and some centers already accept CompactFlash and SmartMedia cards (from digital cameras) for processing.

I think digital technology will definitely supplant analog photography, because it is going to be much cheaper. At least at mass market. (I am not sure about what horizons of analog technology are THEORETICALLY not attainable for digital technology - I am talking about high-end).

So, Kodak is going to make all they can to direct the stream of digital technology users to their photo centers, not into buying various desktop digital photography gadgets like color laser printers -- I am not talking about inkjet technology which is NOT waterproof (just for reference, to project into the future: in the US, you will very likely find a color laser printer (CLP) in any office where the number of employees exceeds 30-50 people, sure where the use of CLP has potential and real benefits). The newest CLPs produce very decent images from digitally stored pictures, and in my opinion, are very likely to take over the market segment of those who use photography on daily basis, and where image quality is important, but is a second priority.

I apologize if any information given here was incorrect -- sometimes it is more based on my impressions, than on sheer facts -- and I welcome any comments from your part - in the sake of the ultimate truth (which is the purpose of this forum I guess :-)))).

All evidence is toward the shift to digital technology -- and it happens already and NOTE: IT SUPPLANTS, NOT CO-EXISTS.

Concerning the high-end, digital technology progresses very quickly. Who could imagine two years ago that there will soon be a camera like Nikon Coolpix 950s? There is a lot of investment into digital image processing and I am sure we will see many wonders ahead. CCD matrices which scan images in scanners and digital cameras are getting more and more advanced. Storage bottleneck is almost liquidated (64 MB and higher capacity Flash memory cards are used already). The advantage of digital technology is that it is often easier to fine-tune -- and the MOST IMPORTANT -- INSTANT ACCESS TO RESULTS.

Sorry for writing in English - Cyrillics is not available.

Thanks,
Vadim

Hi!

Take a look at:

http://nikon.topica.ne.jp/ei_j/digicam/e950_sample.htm

I am afraid it will supplant analog photography!

- цветная фотография не вытесеила полностью ч/б;
- кино не вытеснило фотографию;
